About Electrical Engineering Department
The Laboratory of Physics and Electrical Engineering was established at College of Engineering Pune in 1901. The Department was established in 1932 to run a UG program in electrical engineering. Subsequently, two PG programs namely (1) Power Systems and (2)Control Systems were introduced in 1952. Presently the department runs a B.Tech program in Electrical Engineering and M.Tech programs in three specializations namely (1) Power Electronics and Power Systems (2) Embedded Control Systems and (3) Power Electronics and Machine Drives.
The alumni of this department have contributed remarkably in various fields at national and international level. Dr. Vijay Kelkar, Prof. Padiyar, Dr. Nikit Jakatdar and several others are the proud alumni of the Department. All eligible programs run by the Department are accredited by the NBA for 5 years. The department has excellent industry interaction in the form of representation on Board of Studies, Industry Advisory Board, Co-teaching from industry, besides the sponsored projects and consultancy. The department secured first prize for best industry institute interaction in the All India survey, jointly taken by AICTE and CII in 2016. Eminent academicians like Prof. Bose, Prof. Gole, Prof. Padiyar, Prof. Bhim Singh, have visited the department in the recent past. Almost all faculty of the PEPS group of IIT Bombay are the regular visitors of the Department.
The Department presently has team of 20 faculty members and well qualified staff. It has well equipped laboratories and excellent computational facilities. World class software like MATLAB, Simulink, PSCAD, ETAP, MULTISIM, PSIM, Proteus, Lab view, Maxwell are available in the department to work on top-of-the line projects in various areas of electrical engineering. The indigenously developed laboratory set ups in the department are attracting the attention of elite institutes including the IITs. Some of these set ups are first-of-its-kind in the country. The state-of-the-art facilities include the 30 KVA Grid Simulator, 500 KV impulse Generator, 5 HP four quadrant dynamometer, Fractional H.P. dynamometer, Yocogawa Scopecorder, Power Analyzer, PMUs, Megger Relay Test Bench. The department is always enthusiastic in conducting various courses and workshops for the faculty and students to permeate advances in technology. In 2016, the department organized 6 faculty development programs in various domains.
The department hosts a diverse and vibrant research portfolio in areas such as Green Energy, Real Time Robust Control of Under Actuated Systems, Optimal Control of Power Flow, UPFC, Efficient PM machines, Fuzzy Controllers, Power Converters and Drives, Power quality analysis etc. The department also has excellent testing facilities in the area of high voltage engineering and testing of rotating machines. The research activities of our faculty lead to an extraordinary enrichment of the experience of our students that is realized at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The Department of Electrical Engineering is also having Center of Excellence in Smart Renewable Energy Systems (SRES). The Center also builds on the existing excellence of the electrical and mechanical engineering programs and broadens the scope and expertise to meet the grand challenges in energy and environment.
Post autonomy, the Department has undergone a huge transformation. From past few years, few regular Research Scholars are pursuing Ph.D program.
Over past few years, the Electrical Engineering Department has evolved to reach and hold a unique position in the Technical Education System of the western region of the Country.Read More
